Last night: Wellington Tweet Up

Wellington Tweetup: @McQuillanator (Laura), @sarahrose (Moi), & @MsConstantine (Kim)

I met people from the internet. A lot of people.
And they did not chop me up into little pieces and distribute me around the city.

There was a Wellington "TweetUp" at The Malthouse and I went along, arriving just before the name badges and sending Craig frantic messages trying to look busy as I tried to find someone I recognised (turns out, twitter icons are TINY and NOT USEFUL FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES) until, finally, someone I knew approached me. And she had the name badges.

But oh, I met a lot of lovely people.
And I met a lot of the lovely people I have been following on Twitter for some time. That was probably the best part.

Scowl

scowl

Ahh jeez, Golden Striker. Two things.
1. A scowl is an expression of emotion. Therefore it cannot be emotionless.
2. Cricket Face isn't a scowl. This is a scowl

GaGa Oo La La: the Hair Bow How To...

Lady Gaga Hair Bow

Lady Gaga Hair Bow

Start with straightened hair

Start with straightened hair ...

Tools - rubber band, bobby pins, large clip

You will need: 2x rubber bands, 1x hair clip, many many bobby pins, and a whole mess of hairspray ...

Pony tail where you want the bow. Separate a piece.

Tie hair into a ponytail where you want the bow to end up. Separate out a little piece from the front of the tail to become the centre of the bow.

Clip it forward to become the middle of the bow.

Clip it forward. This is where a fringe comes in handy!

And uh ... I forgot to take any more photos. BUT!
x tie another hair tie 3 inches down the ponytail.
x split the part of the pony tail between the 2 hairties and bobby-pin the hairties together. This makes the 2 'ears' of the bow.
x split the rest of the pony tail in two, bunch up each tail & push each half inside its respective bow-ear.
x unclip the middle of the bow. Lie over the gap between the bow-ears. Pin to the hairties.
x bunch the rest of the middle of the bow up and fit inside one of the bow-ears.
x pin pin pin.
x hairspray hairspray hairspray
x proceed to be adorable.

Guillermo del Toro is Super Cute

Adorable!
Adorable.

Tonight I stood in line for an hour and a half, wearing heels, to get Guillermo del Toro's signature and oh, it was worth it.
I started reading The Strain to pass the time and it made me all tense & terrified. Unity books were playing the Sergio Leone Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo* theme (yes, seriously) and I started shaking, ever so slightly. My tiny hands couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

Guillermo himself was just lovely.
He spent a little bit of time with each person, drawing his little caricature and chatting away.
He told me my name was lovely but then he made a Doctor Who reference I didn't understand. He explained it. Sarah-Jane?I thought there was a Rose too. Eesh. Je n'ai aucune Geek Cred**.
He complimented my reading speed (I was at page 66) & told me it starts getting scary at page 151 so I shouldn't read it tonight before bed.
I thanked him and went on my entirely enchanted way.

I may have a bit of a (platonic) crush on him. Ah ah ah!

* The Good, the Bad, the Ugly. Sounds better in Italian.
** I may not have Geek Cred but I can Google! there was indeed a Sarah Jane, annnnd a Rose.

Ask and ye shall receive

I love twitter.
The following exchange took place at 6am New Zealand time

Heidi Hair encouragement

Heidi Hair!
I always worry that people who don't know me will point and laugh.
Hence the hesitation. I shouldn't have been so damned ridiculous.
Noone pointed and laughed. In fact? I received several compliments!

Heidi Hair!
This is the best shot of the new necklace (kenneth jay lane via outnet.com) that sparked the idea for the Heidi hair.

Heidi Hair!
Plus, I'd just seen an instructional video which gave me the secret to the Heidi braid*.

Heidi Hair!
(note: the rarely seen 0g ear hole)

My hairstyle pretty much made my day today.
Thank you Wendy Brandes!

* The secret? You start the plaits at right angles to your head, like pippi longstockings but then plait them upwards, against your head. I always thought you just made plaited pigtails then folded them upwards and then scowled at the mess they made.

How I know Craig missed me

Last night, after turning off the lights and whispering wishes for sweet dreams, Craig curled his arm over my side & his head into the base of my neck and lay there, falling asleep.
This might not seem like a lot to most people, but Craig and I do not sleep entwined, arms and legs in a knot of a person.
No no, we can't, we have radically different body temperatures.

During the day, Craig can wander around wearing jeans and a tee-shirt while I need a cardigan, and a jacket. And sometimes also a scarf. Bizarre.
He swears it's because he was born in the desert (UAE) and as such? immune to the cold. I think he's just a robot.
But as soon as the sun dips below the hills and we depart for bedfordshire* all of a sudden Craig requires a duvet during all seasons of the year, and sometimes a blanket as well, whereas I need the window open and sleep below just the sheet. With wet hair. Occasionally, on extremely frosty nights I will use the duvet but most of the time? Our bed ends up looking like this:

How do you sleep?
The great wall of half-a-duvet built between us.

If (IF) we do end up falling asleep touching, as soon as Craig is completely unconscious, he starts twitching.
I thought it might have just been when we were completely curled together but I experimented (hee) and even if I leave one arm lying over him, or a hand, ONLY THE AREA I AM TOUCHING BEGINS TO TWITCH.
Craig's subconscious hates me**.
He often accuses me of stealing all the room in the bed. But actually? what happens is I scoot closer to him (I tend to get cold after a while, usually around 2am, what with the wet hair & open window & sheet & all) and he subconsciously scoots AWAY FROM ME. Hateful.

And on top of the heat differences, and the twitching, and the scooting? I can't stand feeling anyone's breath on me while I am trying to get to sleep. Not even my own***.

So last night, pretending like we could sleep in a knot? I knew that Sir C did miss me as much as I missed him.
We lay for minutes and pretended like we were falling asleep, pretended we were in the movies, but we can only be ourselves****, he gave up & I let him leave, his breath had been damn distracting. I snaked my feet over and rested them against his calf. The one thing we can manage. Our connection through the night.

* Yes. I am a whimsical character from 1950s Britain. Why do you ask?
** I'm sure it doesn't really.
*** Good Lord we sound crazy. Is it just us? How do YOU sleep?
**** I wouldn't have us any other way.

Two of my favourite people ...

This is my iPhone wallpaper at the moment.

Sir C and Kat at her Au Revoir party. They think they look silly. I think they look drunk and adorable.

Plus, this way, when I check the time on my phone it looks like they're blowing me kisses.

I Tweet Too Damn Often...

ohdarling: Drinking Cranberry juice with a splash of Rosewater. But no Jameson. It's a Virgin Rosebud! (dirty)

With a few simple (inappropriate) (or HILARIOUS) words, I realised that I have sent THREE THOUSAND twitter messages.

Either I spend way way too much time on Twitter, orrrrrrrr perhaps I've just been using twitter for a long long time. And I have! since April something-or-other 2007. Two years, most definitely.
I only tweet (on average) 4.10958904 times a day. That's nothing!

Okay. So I just went back over allallall my twitter messages and my very first one was in MARCH 2007 :

Dear Dearest, Darling, Husband-of-Mine,

You are currently out racing cars (no, seriously, he is) and I have decided that this is the best time, and the best place to confess something.

Dia de los Muertos

Frida Kahlo Hair

Frida Kaho

Flowers in my hair

Ventricle Heart Necklace

My inspiration for the hair (ish) and the flowers and the shawl (not pictured) was this photo of Frida:

Frida Kahlo

But I also wanted to reference one of her paintings. So I created the necklace to resemble:

Frida Kahlo

I already had the ventricle heart necklace (yea yea. Whatever, it's awesome) and I just added 4 metres (yes) of red ribbon veins that ended in a little pair of scissors.

Yes. There were two of us dressed as Frida Kahlo. No, we hadn't discussed our costumes. It just happened.
The weird thing is that beneath the Frida? we're both called Sarah. That made it really confusing.
